--------------------------------------

The Astoria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce is currently planning a celebration for the 25th anniversary of The Goonies on June 4-7, 2010. The Goonies was filmed around and took place in Astoria, Oregon and still, almost 25 years later, brings fans of the film to the town to explore the sites. To kickoff the planning for the event, the Chamber is holding an art contest to find the art that will be used to promote the event with posters, advertisements, etc.

This celebration promises to be a great follow up to our 20th anniversary event in 2005 which included cast appearances by Jeff “Chunk” Cohen, Sean “Mikey” Astin and Curt “Mr. Perkins” Hanson, bus tours, movie showings and so much more. More details about the event will be announced this fall, along with the winners of this contest.

“We’ve been contacted by numerous fans wanting to send us their art to use for the event since announcing our plans to host the 25th anniversary event, so this call for art seemed a natural addition to the event. We look forward to seeing the artistic talents of the fans from near and far and anticipate a tough decision in awarding the prizes this fall. We will display many of the entries next year during the event for everyone to enjoy.”

Art entries will be accepted through Wednesday, September 9, 2009. The entries will be judged by a volunteer committee with a background in art or marketing, and of course, a love for The Goonies. Prizes will be awarded to the top three selections – 1st: $500, 2nd: $250, 3rd: $150, with the first place art being used as the official event poster, but each of the top 3 designs may be used in marketing efforts for the event. Art may be used in color or black & white applications, in print, on the internet or on T-shirts and other merchandise. Any entry submitted to the contest may be used by the Chamber as a part of the Goonies 25th Anniversary.

SIFF 2010 Midnight Adrenaline Film Lineup

Midnight Adrenaline
In case of damage or leakage, immediately notify cinematic health authorities.

Seattle, WA – Midnight Adrenaline returns to SIFF this year with an overdose of highly addictive, unpredictable, and suspense-inducing features for the cult film junkie. Better than ever, SIFF showcases an onslaught of classic genre film and other underground fixations including a zombie apocalypse, slasher backwoods hillbillies, medieval fantasy games, and unusually enhanced geishas.

This year SIFF brings cult-classic grindhouse film to a whole new level with Israel Lunaʼs controversial transploitation film, Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives. Zombie mayhem ensues with a live ZomBcon event at Boom Noodle before the screening of George A. Romeroʼs Survival of the Dead, the sixth zombie film by the godfather of undead cinema. From Hong Kong, director Pang Ho-Cheung unleashes a gory tale of lifestyle fetishization and a desperate, bloody path towards obtaining oneʼs own Dream Home. In the kitschy RoboGeisha, Japan presents a twisted take on sibling rivalry as two cybernetic-enhanced geishas combat to win the local steel baronʼs heart.

2010 Midnight Adrenaline
Amer, directed by Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani (Belgium, 2009) A dreamy pastiche tour-de-force of 1970s Italian giallo horror movies that plays out a delirious, enigmatic death-dance of fear and desire. The filmʼs three parts, each in a different style, correspond to the childhood, adolescence, and adulthood of its female protagonist—and thatʼs all you need to know.

Centurion, directed by Neil Marshall (United Kingdom, 2010) When their legion is ambushed in Northern Britain, a small platoon of surviving Roman soldiers must evade a revenge-hungry band of barbarian warriors through harsh terrain in an attempt to rescue their general and return to the safety of the Roman frontier.

Dream Home, directed by Pang Ho-Cheung (Hong Kong, 2010) You have no idea how terrifying the housing crisis can get—upwardly-mobile Cheng Lai-Sheung will do anything to move into a new apartment with a magnificent sea view, even if it means going around her mortgage broker and taking matters into her own gory hands. Warning: features disturbingly imaginative violence and lifestyle fetishization.

George A. Romeroʼs Survival of the Dead, directed by George A. Romero (Canada, 2009) The godfather of undead cinema returns with his sixth zombie film as two rival families feud on a remote island—one wants to destroy any and all walking dead, while the other holds back in hopes of finding a cure to return their undead relatives to life.

RoboGeisha, directed by Noboru Iguchi (Japan, 2009) Poor Yoshie lives in the shadow of older sister Kikue, a fast rising star at the local geisha house. But when the local steel baron abducts the pair, transforming them into cybernetic-enhanced geisha assassins, the sisters gleefully elevate their sibling rivalry into a technological arms race to win his heart.

Splice, directed by Natali Vincenzo (Canada, 2009) In this 21st century creature feature, two young scientists willfully ignore society's ethical boundaries, and achieve fame by splicing the DNA of different animals into the human genome to create a new species. However, their creation rapidly develops into a beautiful, yet deadly, winged chimera.

Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives, directed by Israel Luna (USA, 2010) After being violently beaten and left for dead, a group of violated vixens turn into deadly divas and, with newfound confidence and courage, slash their way to vengeance in this controversial slice of grindhouse transploitation.

Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil, directed by Eli Craig (USA, 2010) Hillbillies Tucker and Dale have found their perfect “fixer-upper” cabin, but remodeling is never easy, particularly when a group of college co-eds on spring break start killing themselves all over your property.

The Wild Hunt, directed by Alexandre Franchi (Canada, 2009) When Erikʼs girlfriend leaves him to attend a weekend medieval re-enactment game, he follows in hopes of winning her back. But as Erik, with the help of his Viking chieftain brother Bjorn, treads deeper into the game in search of his love, he inadvertently disrupts the fantasylandʼs delicate balance of make-believe.

Seattle bid for Westercon 2012

Seattle, WA. April 22, 2010

Seattle Westercon in 2012

I wanted to formally announce that our dates are firm for
Thursday, July 5 through Sunday, July 8 2012 and that we will have days available on both sides so travelers can enjoy our lovely state. There are some plans at this time to provide some informal fannish fun things to do on the 4th so those wishing to spend the full holiday with us can rest assured there will be something
to do.

The hotel that I have filed with, the SeaTac Marriot has given us a firm offer, which at the time of filing we were going to go with. However, in the meantime the
Hilton and the Doubletree made better offers. The best all around for our convention, should we win, is from the Doubletree. We wanted to let the voters know before the vote that it is most likely we will sign a contract with the Doubletree when we win. We will have the contract in hand in Pasadena if anyone should want to review it.

Our
letter of intent from the Marriot's letter is still valid. There is no penalty if we do not use it. The Marriott has decided that they really don't like parties and loud music and business in their sleeping areas. In working with them for other events as the hotel liaison, I see how hard it is for our representative to find creative ways to make it possible to have parties and accommodate our fannish needs. I feel that is a major issue when we come in with a larger number of people. The Doubletree likes fandom, likes conventions and is used to having yearly fannish activities in their facilities. They know what we need.

This all happened after the paperwork was submitted to Pasadena. Call me gun-shy but I won't have another facilities incident if I can help it, ever, for anything. I kept looking and as a result, we have a better offer. Because I only have to file with a letter of intent, per the bylaws, there
was no need to send in a modification. However, I do want to let everyone know in advance of the vote.

We hope to see you all in Pasadena!

Thank you

Full weekend adult patron (18 & up) - $235.00

A little info on registration that might help:

Typically the best time to buy a membership for a convention is the Sunday of the convention before. Obviously this isn’t always possible, but if it is, it’s usually a bargain. So Steamcon II memberships were available at Steamcon I on Sunday for the lowest price. This is so that the convention will have a little money on hand to start working on next year’s convention. It’s also usually less than a one day membership will cost at the door, so you might as well make the small investment even if you think you might not be able to attend all three days.

Memberships can often be rolled over to the next year or transferred to someone else if you find yourself unable to attend. On Sunday of Steamcon I, we weren’t sure what weekend we would be holding Steamcon II, so it was a bit of a gamble, but not a very substantial one. As the con dates get closer, membership costs for a convention usually go up a few times, leading to the at-the-door-price which is the most expensive, if the convention even has any left. More and more conventions have been reaching their maximum capacity during the pre-registration phase and are then unable to sell any memberships at the door at all.

This is a good sign for the convention, but can lead to disappointed fans. Steamcon I was very nearly sold out before the convention, and was only able to sell a small number of memberships at the door. While we have twice as much space for Steamcon II, there is still a possibility of selling out again this year, so pre-registration is a very good choice if you want to be sure you can attend. I hope this information is helpful to you. Feel free to email any further questions to info@steamcon.org.
