Jet City Comic Show: a one-day comics event for the Pacific Northwest
Seattle proves once again that it is a hotbed for comics writers and artists with the launch of a new convention, the Jet City Comic Show. Jet City will take place September 25, 2010 at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall in Seattle, WA.
Seattle, WA - Seattle proves once again that it is a hotbed for comics writers and artists with the launch of a new convention, the Jet City Comic Show. Jet City (www.jetcitycomicshow.com) will take place September 25, 2010 at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall in Seattle, WA.
“We do many shows around the country, but there’s nothing like doing one in your own backyard,” says Eric Reynolds, director of marketing for Fantagraphics Books (www.fantagraphics.com). “We look forward to helping Jet City grow into the kind of show that reflects the wonderful comics scene in the Great Northwest.”
Co-founder James Taylor, publisher of Rorschach Entertainment and an accomplished artist and inker, says he and co-founder Brian Meredith (exhibits director, Emerald City Comicon) saw a distinct need in the region for a program of this kind.
“We felt the Pacific Northwest, Seattle specifically, had the need for a quality one-day show in the fall to help fill the void in the region for both exhibitors and fans,” says Taylor. “Jet City Comics Show will be a laid-back event by comparison to other conventions, a chance for fans to have fun, be entertained, browse through comics and visit with some fantastic artists and writers.”
Featured guests will include Francis Manapul (artist: The Flash, Adventure Comics), Dave Johnson (cover artist: 100 Bullets, Unknown Soldier and more) and Dan Panosian (artist: X-Men Forever). The show will feature a number of prominent local writers and artists, including:
• Peter Bagge (Hate) & Jim Woodring (Frank, Jim)
• Michael Oeming (artist/writer: Powers, Rapture)
• Greg Rucka (writer: Batwoman, Queen & Country)
• Matthew Southworth (artist: Stumptown)
• Shane White (artist/writer: Things Undone, North Country)
• Joshua Ortega (Writer of Gears of War 2, Video Game & Comics)
In addition to comics writers and artists, Jet City will also feature actor Scott L. Schwartz—the “ultimate tough guy.” Trained by wrestling legend Walter “Killer” Kowalski, and most often recognized for memorable movie moments such as beating up George Clooney in Ocean’s 11, Schwartz has also written and directed his own film, Changing Hands (www.changinghandsfilm.com).
The Seattle Center Exhibition Hall is a 36,000-square-foot conference center and is a focal point for the entertainment and cultural scene of Seattle, as well as the home of the Space Needle.
“This show will return us to our roots, focusing on the local comics scene as well as spotlighting creators from outside our region,” says Taylor.
The show will also be working with local charitable organizations, such as the Ronald McDonald House and Children’s Hospital of Seattle.

Stumptown Comics Fest 2011
STUMPTOWN COMICS FEST 2011 ANNOUNCES DATES, NEW VENUE, GUEST LINEUP
The 8th annual Stumptown Comics Fest will take place on April 16th and 17th, and be held in its new location at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon. In recent years the exhibition hall has been packed to the gills; this move to the Convention Center will give attendees room to breathe with 30,000 square feet of exhibition space (nearly double the square footage) and will allow the amount of table to be increased with room for future growth.
A small number of guests have already been confirmed for the next fest, from local, national, and even international stages. Guests are to include: Carla Speed McNeil (Finder), Molly Crabapple (illustrator, founder of Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School), Kurt Busiek (writer for DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Image), Larry Marder (Tales of the Beanworld), and Barry Deutsch (Hereville). This list is by no means complete, and regular announcements will be made over the coming months as more details are confirmed.
Indigo Kelleigh, founder of the Stumptown Comics Fest, is returning as the festival director for the next three years (2011-2013). Kelleigh brings his experience in both event coordination and the comics industry to the team, and is already working to make this upcoming year a peak at what’s to come. Shannon T. Stewart, Festival Director for the 2009 and 2010 fests and a current Board member of the Stumptown Comics Foundation, is supportive of Kelleigh’s involvement. "We're all elated to have Indigo, the creator of the Fest, return to the position of Director,” says Stewart, “and I personally look forward to working with him and to the amazing ideas he has in store for Stumptown over not just this season, but the next few years leading to the ten year anniversary!"
This will be the eighth year of the Stumptown Comics Fest (founded 2004), which has become the largest creator-focused comics festival in the Northwest. The amount of comics fans attending the event continues to climb as does the national and international attention our local event garners from artists, writers, editors, and publishers. Sidekicks & Henchman Exhibit
The Flatcolor Gallery in Seattle opened an exhibit this month called "Sidekicks & Henchmen" that's "focused on comic book characters outside of the Hollywood movie heroes and villains. There is a mix of local and national artists that are on display. The show work is inspired by lesser-known comic book characters sidekicks, henchmen, heroes and villains."

Exhibits!
With the popularily of last year's ehxibits where we featured some incredible GI Joe and Transformers toys and original art, My Little Ponies, a great Barbie display as well as original comic and animation art, we plan to have an even bigger and better exhibit area this year! We'll be celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back with a great display or theatrical posters and rare vintage toys from Kenner Canada. We'll also have displays of Star Wars Kubricks, Gremlins and more original comic and toy art!
Collector Panels!
11am: Independent comic creators Daniel Schneider, Jeff Martin, Bob Prodor and James Davidge will be discussing the do's and don'ts of independent comic publishing as well as discussing their current, must-read projects: Merc, Hell Inc and HEAT: The Space Age of Pro Wrestling, and The Duchess Ranch of Old John Ware, respectively.
Noon: A History of Kenner Toys with David Gaule. Illinois native David Gaule is a well-known vintage Star Wars collector and Kenner historian and we're pleased to have David at this year's event where he'll be discussing the history of Kenner toys; from well-known lines like Star Wars to obscure classics such as Milky the Cow!
1pm: G1 Transformers. Vance McLennan, who's incredible Transformers exhibit last year attracted a lot of attention, will be giving a discussion on the history of Transformers, from their start as a Takara toy line in Japan, to their Hasbro years and back to how the line finished off in Japan. He'll also be showcasing some very cool items from his collection!
The 501st Stormtrooper Legion, Badlands Division will be in attendance once again and will have some great displays planned for the kids and young-at-heart alike!
With so much going on at this year's show, you don't dare miss it!

Northwest Comic Convention
New Portland Comic Convention Debuts This June
Terry's Comics, Harley Yee's Comics and Big Ron's Comics have announced the launch of a new convention, the Northwest Comic Convention in Portland, Oregon. The Northwest Comic Convention will take place Sunday, June 7, 2009 and run from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Both admission and parking are free for this event, which will be held at the Holiday Inn at the Portland International Airport.
Confirmed guests at this time are Bernie Wrightston & Bruce Jones.
“We will be bringing many Silver Age and Bronze Age CGC-certified comic books that will be offered at this show for the first time,” said Terry O’Neil of Terry’s Comics.“

Registration for 2009 PZS is now OPEN!
Hello PZS friends!This is your final heads up that registration for the 2009 Portland Zine Symposium is now OPEN!
- Registration is PER DAY: Attendees will be able to register for one day, two days, or all three days.
- Registration is a $5 donation for a half table per day and a $10 donation for a full table per day: So, a full table for three days would be a $30 donation, or you could do a half table for three days for a $15 donation, or you could do a full table for two days and a half for one day for a $25 donation, etc.
- Full table registration is limited to 30 of the 90 tables: If you are planning to register for a full table this year, please keep this in mind and give us a detailed explanation as to why you'd prefer a full table when you register online. Not all table registrations will be approved, As full table registration will be limited to make sure PZS is more inclusive, so please DO NOT MAKE YOUR FULL TABLE DONATION UNTIL YOUR FULL TABLE REGISTRATION HAS BEEN CONFIRMED AND APPROVED.
- Please register ONLINE: Even if you're mailing in your donation for a table, PLEASE REGISTER ONLINE so that we have your info and you don't end up getting waitlisted.

Portland Comics Month 2009!

Holy Moses!
For the second year in a row, the mayor has declared April "Portland Comics Month," and we've cataloged nearly FORTY comics-related events happening this month in the Rose City. Check out the current tally below, and many thanks to the Multnomah County Libraries, participating organizations, bookstores, publishers, and galleries, and our fellow comics- and beer-loving pals at MacTarnahan's.
New this year are "Comics & Music" nights, a fancy and fabulous benefit dinner for the CBLDF and the Stumptown Comics Foundation (with esteemed comics creators and Mayor Sam Adams), and more ... just look at tonight's First Thursday list. David Mack and Paul Hornschemeier FTW.

Edmonton Collectible Toy & Comic Show Panels
The Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show is proud to announce the inclusion of four exciting Collecting Panels to the day's programming! We're proud that our show attracts expert collectors from across North America and to be able to offer specialized panels that are normally reserved for larger conventions in the US.
The panels will take place in Salon 3, which is located just one floor down from Hall A and will begin at noon. Seating will be limited so we encourage people to arrive early for the panels they wish to see. The panel schedule is as follows:

New Guests At The Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show!
Legendary comic artist Joe Rubinstein will be at the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show to meet fans, sign comics, sketch your favourite characters and take commission orders. Joe has been working in the comic industry since 1975 and has inked every major artist, character and book for every major company throughout his near 35 years in the business! We're proud to have such a legend in the industry at the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show!
We're also pleased to annouce that in conjunction with the Edmonton Collectible Toy & Comic Show, the home-grown documentary on geek culture 'Pegwarmers' will make it's Edmonton premiere on Saturday, March 28th, 3:00 PM at the Stanley A. Milner Library Theatre in Downtown Edmonton.
This will be an all-ages, free screening for everyone involved in the documentary, including members (as well as friends and family) of the '501st', 'The Knights of the Northern Realm', 'EGOR', 'KAG Kanada', 'Edmontoooine' and pretty much everyone else involved in the documentary. Plus there will be a few door prizes, as well as a Q&A segment with director Jason Hoehn after the screening and after hours entertainment provided by Brock Skywalker!

Stumptown Announce Award Nominations for 2009
Third Annual Trophy Awards Now Open for Nominations!

Creators, publishers, and self-publishers planning to attend the 2009 Stumptown Comics Fest on April 18th and 19th are hereby invited to nominate their newest comics and books—or those of others!—for the annual Trophy Awards. These awards will celebrate the best new works from the Fest's many exhibitors on Saturday night, April 18th, 2009 at Cosmic Monkey Comics.
To be considered for a Trophy Award, simply fill out the online form, submit it, and send two copies of each work—along with the $5-per-category entry fee—to the address below. The online nomination form is now available at www.stumptowncomics.com/awards. Please limit nominations to two categories per work, and note that no submissions will be considered after April 4th. Works should be no older than one year. Winners are chosen by balloted vote conducted on Saturday with attendees of the fest, and a display of all nominated works will be available for general perusal at the show. We ask that nominees, or someone representing them, attend the awards ceremony at Cosmic Monkey, as non-represented winners may be subject to good-natured mockery for absenteeism.
The awards categories are:
* DEBUT: For works freshly released at the fest. Come on out, little books.
* DIY: For self-published works showing exemplary spunk, energy, and ingenuity.
* SMALL PRESS: For publications between mainstream and DIY.
* WEBCOMIC: For exemplary works published on the web.
* WRITING: You know, the words.
* ART: You know, the pictures.
* DESIGN: Examines the quality of production. How a book looks, feels, and smells.
* MYSTERY: Not the genre, but the award itself! A secret panel of judges will select a book, website, person, project, or event for special recognition with this enigmatic award. No nominations are accepted for this award, though all are eligible.

Hey Expo fans!
With the big event only 10 weeks away, the Calgary Expo is in full swing! If you haven't gone to the website in a while, there's been a bunch of updates!
Tickets are now available online, or a select comic retailers. Pick up your advance tickets today and save! Purchase a 2-day pass and you could win 1 of 3 VIP packages! Photo ops & artbooks are also available for pre-purchase.
We've signed special guest Tahmoh Penikett to appear. Tahmoh plays Captain Karl 'Helo' Agathon from the Battlestar Galactica series, and he also has a starring role in Joss Whedon's new series, Dollhouse!
We've also added our anime lineup, with Yuri Lowenthal, Aaron Dismuke, Tara Platt, and special performances from the 404s and musical group Thwomp!
We've also got a special appearance from Harry Potter's Matthew Lewis, aka Neville Longbottom.
For you comic fans, we've added Bruce Timm, Michael Golden, Joe Jusko, Herb Trimpe, Carla Speed McNeil, Renee Witterstaetter and Ray Fawkes.

ReBoot co-creator Gavin Blair to appear at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo
Gavin Blair, one of the creators of ReBoot will be making a rare appearance at this show. ReBoot is a ground breaking CGI animation series much loved in Canada. This will be Gavin Blair's second ever appearance at a Canadian comic convention.
There will be a ReBoot Q&A and Gavin will be signing copies of The Art of ReBoot on both days, produced by Beach Creative Studios.

Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show
We're pleased to announce that Matthew Wood will be joining us at the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show!
Perhaps best known for his voice portrayal of the menacing General Grievous in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and the animated Clone Wars series', Matthew Wood also played Bib Fortuna in Episode I and has voiced many more characters in the Star Wars Saga, including those of Ody Mandrell, Magaloof, Seboca, Wat Tambor, Poggle the Lessor and the Battle Droids! When Matthew isn't providing the voices for some of the most memorable characters in the Star Wars Universe, he's hard at work as the Supervising Sound Editor at Skywalker Sound where he's recently received two Academy Award nominations for There Will Be Blood and Disney/Pixar's Wall*E!
Matthew joins James Kyson Lee who stars as Ando in the hit TV series Heroes and collecting book authors Mark Bellomo and Gus Lopez as the latest special guest in attendance at the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show.
