Steamcon III is almost here!

Dear Steamcon members,

Can you feel the excitement building?  We’re only a little over a month out.  Steamcon III will be here in no time.  Are you prepared?!

Do you have your room reserved?  The room rate expires on Monday September 12th, so don’t delay!  Make yours now! http://www.steamcon.org/hotel.php

If you don’t have your membership yet, you have until September 31st to do it online.  After that the price goes up and you will need to purchase it at the door.  One day memberships will be available at the door this year on the day they are valid for only.

Special event tickets have gone on sale!  The Airship Awards Banquet, the Amphitrite Society Tea, the Wayfarer’s Brunch and the Nautilus Concert will all be wonderful events!  You will need to purchase these by September 31st as well, except for the concert tickets, which will be available at the door, if they haven’t sold out by then.

Steamcon: T-shirt Contest Deadline Extended! September 10th

There is still time!  We need you to design a t-shirt for Steamcon2.  Using our theme of steampunk in the weird, weird west, come up with a suitable design for the official t-shirt for Steamcon II. Robotic sharp shooters, mystical shaman, or airship stage coaches?What would best represent steampunk in the American west?    

The shirt should say "Steamcon II" in roman numerals and a serif font.  Any other text is optional, but it can have the date and "Weird, Weird West" as well.  Designs will be printed on a dark colored t-shirt either black or dark brown, so take this in to account when designing.  Please do not use any copyrighted character/s, unless you are the copyright holder and can give us the rights to print.

Who is eligible: Anyone who wishes to submit a t-shirt design.

Deadline: Submissions must be emailed to t-shirtcontest@steamcon.org
by September 10th.

Design specs:  Full color, Size: anywhere from 8" x 8" up to 8.5" x 11".  Initial submissions should be jpegs of 100 DPI.  The final art will need to be Photoshop files with the layers or bitmaps or tiff or comparable; at 300 DPI.   We will request those of the winner after judging takes place.

Reward:  A membership to Steamcon 2, a pair of concert tickets for the Saturday concert at Steamcon II, two free t-shirts and your name on the chests of steampunks everywhere!  (If contest winner is unable to attend Steamcon 2, all rewards can be transferred to Steamcon 3 or they may receive current equivalent monetary compensation.)

Steamcon II Registration is now open!

Registration for Steamcon II is now open. You can now buy your full weekend membership. One day memberships will not be available on the website, and will only be available at the door if we do not sell out by that time. Memberships are will call style, so you will be picking them up at the pre-registration table at the con. Nothing will be mailed to you. You will need to present valid identification at the
time of pick up, so please use your legal name to register. The prices below are good until July 1st, 2010.

The patron level membership is intended as a way for you to help Steamcon by providing much needed capital in the initial stages of our convention process. Your contribution is tax deductible, and will set you apart from the general membership. Rank has its privileges of course, so you will receive a special exclusive gift as our thanks, as well as an opportunity to purchase special event tickets early, early seating for those events, a special reception with our participants and any other perks we can bestow throughout the Steamcon II weekend.

Full weekend teen (6-17) - $20.00
Full weekend adult (18 & up) - $35.00
Full weekend teen patron (6-17) - $220.00
Full weekend adult patron (18 & up) - $235.00

A little info on registration that might help:

Typically the best time to buy a membership for a convention is the Sunday of the convention before. Obviously this isn’t always possible, but if it is, it’s usually a bargain. So Steamcon II memberships were available at Steamcon I on Sunday for the lowest price. This is so that the convention will have a little money on hand to start working on next year’s convention. It’s also usually less than a one day membership will cost at the door, so you might as well make the small investment even if you think you might not be able to attend all three days.

Memberships can often be rolled over to the next year or transferred to someone else if you find yourself unable to attend. On Sunday of Steamcon I, we weren’t sure what weekend we would be holding Steamcon II, so it was a bit of a gamble, but not a very substantial one. As the con dates get closer, membership costs for a convention usually go up a few times, leading to the at-the-door-price which is the most expensive, if the convention even has any left. More and more conventions have been reaching their maximum capacity during the pre-registration phase and are then unable to sell any memberships at the door at all.

This is a good sign for the convention, but can lead to disappointed fans. Steamcon I was very nearly sold out before the convention, and was only able to sell a small number of memberships at the door. While we have twice as much space for Steamcon II, there is still a possibility of selling out again this year, so pre-registration is a very good choice if you want to be sure you can attend.
