Artimation Showcases Opportunities for Young Creative Talent
ARTimation Media Arts Festival
Vancouver, BC Canada
http://artimation.ca/
The Artimation Media Arts Festival, put on by the Art Institute of Vancouver, takes over the spacious Rocky Mountaineer Station on March 1, 2009. Creativity and imagination breed the type of students who possess unlimited and inexhaustible talents. These students have the ability to take you into a world in which they become the master. Don’t miss this opportunity to join them on a journey to the end of their story, told passionately though fantastical characters, animated creatures, visual effects, mythical environments, music and lyrics, and cinematic art. Their power lies not in which form of media arts they use, but rather in the students’ creativity, originality, ambition, passion and commitment to art and design.

Stumptown Announce Award Nominations for 2009
Third Annual Trophy Awards Now Open for Nominations!
February 17, 2009
Creators, publishers, and self-publishers planning to attend the 2009 Stumptown Comics Fest on April 18th and 19th are hereby invited to nominate their newest comics and books—or those of others!—for the annual Trophy Awards. These awards will celebrate the best new works from the Fest's many exhibitors on Saturday night, April 18th, 2009 at Cosmic Monkey Comics.
To be considered for a Trophy Award, simply fill out the online form, submit it, and send two copies of each work—along with the $5-per-category entry fee—to the address below. The online nomination form is now available at www.stumptowncomics.com/awards. Please limit nominations to two categories per work, and note that no submissions will be considered after April 4th. Works should be no older than one year. Winners are chosen by balloted vote conducted on Saturday with attendees of the fest, and a display of all nominated works will be available for general perusal at the show. We ask that nominees, or someone representing them, attend the awards ceremony at Cosmic Monkey, as non-represented winners may be subject to good-natured mockery for absenteeism.
The awards categories are:
* DEBUT: For works freshly released at the fest. Come on out, little books.
* DIY: For self-published works showing exemplary spunk, energy, and ingenuity.
* SMALL PRESS: For publications between mainstream and DIY.
* WEBCOMIC: For exemplary works published on the web.
* WRITING: You know, the words.
* ART: You know, the pictures.
* DESIGN: Examines the quality of production. How a book looks, feels, and smells.
* MYSTERY: Not the genre, but the award itself! A secret panel of judges will select a book, website, person, project, or event for special recognition with this enigmatic award. No nominations are accepted for this award, though all are eligible.
Please mail your entries to Stumptown Trophy Awards '09, P.O. Box 40715 Portland, OR 97240 in time for an April 4th delivery, and make your checks out to The Stumptown Comics Foundation. Then come on out to the 6th Annual Stumptown Comics Fest at the Lloyd Center Doubletree (1000 NE Multnomah, Portland OR, 97232) on April 18th and 19th, and join the 3rd annual Trophy Awards shindig and ceremony at Cosmic Monkey Comics (5335 NE Sandy Blvd., Portland OR, 97213). Hope to see you there!

Peter Fernandez is an American actor, voice actor, film director, and film crew person from the United States with extensive experience in screen writing, production, and voice and dialog direction. Despite a vast and varied career in entertainment extending from the late 1930s to the present day, Fernandez is perhaps best known for his uncredited roles of both the title character, and Rex Racer/Racer X in the 1967 anime dub of Speed Racer of which he also wrote the English version; he was also the voice director for the series. Peter, among others, in his capacity as a voice-actor, writer, and producer, was instrumental in introducing many anime series to Anglophonic audiences.
Sakura-Con is pleased to announce Wendy Powell as a Guest of Honor for Sakura-Con 2009. Wendy Powell has been a professional voice actress for FUNimation Entertainment and OkraTron 5000 for over seven years. She is probably most well known for a little villain named "Envy" on Fullmetal Alchemist. Wendy is also known for smaller parts . . . in which she usually dies a most painful death. Wendy's first love is the Theater (although Anime is quickly catching up!!!) and she works in local theaters in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
Many more guest announcements will be coming through in the next few weeks-please keep an eye on www.sakuracon.org for the latest details.
Sakura-Con is the first and largest Pacific Northwest convention devoted to Japanese animation (anime), comics (manga), gaming and traditional Japanese culture. It is the destination event for an expected attendance of over 15,000 fans, industry leaders, celebrities, and artists. Sakura-Con is the fifth largest convention of it's kind in the United States.
ANCEA is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about popular and traditional Japanese media. Sakura-Con is ANCEA's main realization of that mission.
Kappei Yamaguchi is making his first West coast appearance at Sakura-Con 2009 as a guest of honor. Yamaguchi is a popular and prolific seiyuu (voice actor) best known for the roles of Ranma (Ranma ½) Tombo (Kiki's Delivery Service), Yattaro (Kyattou Ninden Teyandee), Inuyasha (InYuasha), L (Death Note), Usopp (One Piece), Hideyoshi (Law of Ueki), and Kaito Kid and Shinichi Kudo (Case Closed).
Yamaguchi has dozens of roles to his credit-many of them are lead roles in very notable series. He is known as one of Japan's most prolific voice actors. Additionally, he works on video games and Japanese dubs of foreign shows. Japanese fans will also know him as the voice of "Bugs Bunny" and South Park's "Kyle". On top of all that, he sings, performing theme songs for many of the anime he's starred in, (including Ranma ½ and Eyeshield 21).

Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show
We're pleased to announce that Matthew Wood will be joining us at the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show!
Perhaps best known for his voice portrayal of the menacing General Grievous in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and the animated Clone Wars series', Matthew Wood also played Bib Fortuna in Episode I and has voiced many more characters in the Star Wars Saga, including those of Ody Mandrell, Magaloof, Seboca, Wat Tambor, Poggle the Lessor and the Battle Droids! When Matthew isn't providing the voices for some of the most memorable characters in the Star Wars Universe, he's hard at work as the Supervising Sound Editor at Skywalker Sound where he's recently received two Academy Award nominations for There Will Be Blood and Disney/Pixar's Wall*E!
Matthew joins James Kyson Lee who stars as Ando in the hit TV series Heroes and collecting book authors Mark Bellomo and Gus Lopez as the latest special guest in attendance at the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show.
In other news...
We have an exciting advertising opportunity available for businesses who wish to advertise in our show booklet which will be seen not only by event attendees but by everyone who receives the Edmonton Examiner (which has a greater circulation than the Sun and Journal combined)! News about the bid for 2011 Worldcon
It is with grave regret and a deep disappointment that I must announce that
the Seattle bid has to pull out of the race to host the Worldcon in 2011.
This is due to an unforeseen event and our inability to reach a formal first
option agreement with our preferred facilities. We had initial options on
facilities, but when it came time to reduce them to formal writing, we found
that our preferred facilities had groups willing to make the financial
commitment ahead of us. Seattle is such a popular destination for
conventions that all of the reasonable dates (early August through early
September) already have groups that have firmer commitments than we do.
After examining the options and alternatives, consulting with our respected
advisors and exploring any number of other possibilities we have determined
that there are just no viable alternatives, which make sense for the fannish
community available to us. We do not want to host the Worldcon in a venue
and situation that would prove to be less than World class. In this
economy, it is refreshing to know that Seattle remains a popular destination
for conventions and tourists even if it is one of the saddest things I can
think of at the moment.
I want to personally thank all of the fannish community, our supporters, my
advisors, friends and family for giving so completely of yourselves over the
last several years. I can personally not think of anyone I would not have
wanted to produce this event with other than you - You all gave so much and
went so far to make this happen. Thank you for everything!
We will be reviewing future opportunities with our potential facilities with
an eye toward bidding for a subsequent year.
